Visual Studio Code is a free open-source and cross-platform code editor developed by Microsoft. And while thereвЂ™s many options available, the one that I love most is Visual Studio Code. I feel I could have done a better job in explaining the problem here but this will have to do for now. My intention in writing this was documenting my own findings and understanding them better. This means that the machine-specific Python interpreter path does not need to go into the workspaceвЂ™s settings.json at all. However, the new mechanism is actually better because the current Python interpreter is now stored in the workspace internal state (not settings.json). At first, I thought this would be a problem with different virtual environments. This new setting is not available at the workspace level which means we canвЂ™t have different settings per project. Specifically, I added the new faultInterpreterPath and removed the old setting. On searching a bit more, I found the documentation for Python environments in VS Code and went about making changes to my configuration.

The reason this affected me in the new instance was that I was enrolled in the experiment on the fresh installation. Instead, a new user setting faultInterpreterPath was introduced in an A/B experiment. I recalled some of the warnings and notices from the initial start-up of VS Code and one of the notices was that the setting python.pythonPath was removed. There would be no selection box to select the Python interpreter. I would only see a message вЂњActivating ExtensionsвЂ¦вЂќ and thatвЂ™s it. The command to select the Python interpreter would not respond at all. Even the modules were installed but VS Code could not find it because it was using the default Python interpreter. I am using pipenv to manage Python dependencies per project and linters such as pylint and tools like black were installed in a Python venv. Weirdly, even regular editor functions did not work such as local changes were not being highlighted.ДЇurthermore, the IDE kept reporting that certain modules were not found. There was no autocomplete of function suggestions and the IDE behaved sluggishly. The problem was that VS Code didnвЂ™t work like an IDE for Python anymore. I was beginning to clean up the extensions I didnвЂ™t need and resetting the configuration. My assumption was that some of the extensions wouldnвЂ™t work properly since this is the new M1 processor (Apple Silicon). Ultimately, I started looking into what extensions were restored and their settings.

A restart helped but only for a short while. IDE features would disappear (those given by the Pylance language server) and it would only remain a text editor (a sluggish one at that). VS Code kept on crashing when working on simple Python projects. As it happened, after I ran the scripts, Visual Studio Code was set up with all my extensions along with Python extensions. I have Visual Studio Code covered in both of these. Additionally, I use a tool called mackup along with DropBox to sync configuration for almost all my applications.
